Who we are

Slate is made and run by Roxton Barry in Las Vegas, Nevada. Privacy questions or requests: roxtonb@smu.edu.

What stays in your browser

Your courses, assignments, grades, submissions and check-offs are read from your own Canvas session and stored only in the extension's storage on your computer. They are never uploaded. Slate never asks for or sees your Canvas password; it reads Canvas through the login you already have, like another Canvas tab. Minutes Slate times on its own while an assignment's Canvas page is open also stay in your browser.

What reaches the Slate server

Activation: your access code and your Canvas numeric user id, used to link the code to your account (a code works for one student).

Reading your course documents (on by default, one switch to turn off): the text of your course syllabi, Simple Syllabus pages, course Home pages, Modules lists, syllabus PDFs and any page you add yourself is sent to the Slate server, which reads the deadlines from it using Anthropic's Claude AI. Course documents only: never your grades or submissions. Results are saved by document content, with no student identity attached, so a classmate with the same syllabus gets it from that saved copy. Anthropic processes this text to produce the answer under its commercial terms and doesn't use it to train its models. Turn this off in the Slate popup ("Read my syllabus & Home page") and documents stop leaving your browser.

Class time medians (optional): when you confirm how long an assignment took, Slate sends an anonymous report: scrambled one-way codes for the course and assignment (the server can't read the titles from them), the minutes, and your access code. Reports are pooled into class medians like "about 50 minutes, 12 students". Only groups of 3 or more are ever shown, and no one's individual time is shown or can be recovered. Skipping sends nothing.

The day-3 check-in (optional): if you answer the one-time question about whether time estimates feel right, the server keeps your answer, your optional note, your school's Canvas address and your Slate version. No name, grades or course content.

Problem reports (optional): "Report a problem" opens an email in your own mail app with technical details (Slate version, browser, counts and error messages, no course content). Nothing is sent unless you send that email.

Payments

Subscriptions are handled by Stripe. Stripe collects your email, payment details and billing information on its own checkout page under Stripe's privacy policy; we never see your full card number. On our side, Stripe's records hold your access code, your subscription status, and, if you came through a friend's referral link, that referral name.

The website

slateforcanvas.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page visits. It uses no cookies and doesn't track you across sites; we only see totals like page views and referring sites. The website sets no cookies of its own, and there are no ads or third-party trackers.

What the server keeps

Code-to-account links, daily usage counts, the saved document results (no identity), the anonymous class time data, check-in answers, and AI usage totals (tokens and cost, no identity). The server holds your network address only briefly in memory to stop abuse, and doesn't keep browsing history. We never sell or rent data, and we don't share it except with the services that run Slate (Stripe for payments, Anthropic for reading documents, Render to host the server, Netlify and Cloudflare for the website) or when the law requires it.

How long we keep it, and your choices

Uninstalling the extension deletes everything stored in your browser. Saved document results and anonymous class data have no identity attached and are kept to serve other students. To have your code link, check-in answers or time reports removed, or to ask what we hold about you, email roxtonb@smu.edu and we'll handle it within 30 days. Payment records are kept by Stripe as the law requires.

Children

Slate is made for college students and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top, and for meaningful changes we'll tell subscribers by email or in the extension before they take effect.
